ECM as Transformative Technology

technology is transforming our lives, and nowhere is this more apparent than on today’s college campuses...

Old habits die hard. There are still those of us who, for example, prefer writing out physical checks when paying bills, then dropping them in an envelope – with a real stamp! There are those who prefer at least having a landline in their home, no matter how often or seldom they use it. And really… will we even get used to the option of having a television screen in our refrigerators?

Technological advances happen all the time. If you feel as though those advances are coming at us a little faster than usual, you’re not paranoid; you’re perceptive. In his latest book, “Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations,” noted national columnist Thomas L. Friedman details the numbers that give credence to that gut feeling.

In the book, he quotes Eric Teller, CEO of Google’s X Research and Development Lab, who says that the rate at which technology advances has begun to rapidly increase. This is because each new discovery builds on what came before it.

“By 1900, it was taking 20 to 30 years for technology to
take one step big enough that the world became uncomfortably
different…In 2016, that time window…has become so short
that it’s on the order of five to seven years from the time
something is introduced to it being ubiquitous.”

—Eric Teller

Seem daunting? Then there’s Moore’s Law, which argues that computing power doubles every year. The law has held true for more than 50 years. Even those not so gifted in match can see the disparity there – and it’s illustrated in the below graph.

Indeed, technology is transforming our lives – and quickly! Nowhere is this more apparent than on today’s college campuses.

Transformative Power In Higher Education

Here are four statistics that illuminate the state of technology from the higher education student perspective.
The EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research (ECAR) Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2016 — which includes findings from 71,641 undergraduate students from 183 institutions across 12 countries and 37 U.S. states — reports that:

  1. From 2015 to 2016, smartphone ownership increased from 92 percent to 96 percent.
  2. 93 percent of students own a laptop.
  3. Student ownership of wearable technologies (e.g., fitness devices, headsets, smartwatches) has increased to 29 percent. That’s a 150-percent increase since just 2015.
  4. When it comes to coursework, 78 percent of students agree that the use of technology contributes to their success.

Companies like FileSolve and Hyland understand this forward motion and we fully embrace it. Whether it’s admissions processing, activity in the registrar’s office, financial aid verification or in a blended-learning environment — leveraging technology clears the way for students to focus and find their paths more easily.

Transformative technology isn’t just “neat,” it’s becoming an indispensable part of modern society. That’s huge.

The Right Technology Partners Can Deliver The Right Outcomes

With finite funds to spend for IT upgrades and limited money available to quickly design, implement, integrate, support and expand solutions, finding the right technology partner is essential for these institutions to be able to achieve their goals. Of equal importance is a technology platform that has integration capabilities with SIS and ERP solutions. In order to leverage valuable data at today’s amped-up pace, automated workflow management capabilities and case management solutions are key tools to be considered. The need to be not only accessible, but highly configurable, and not depend on custom coding and other valuable IT resources.

We all know that it’s people who enable great institutions to do great things. Insert the name of your favorite college or university here… and it’s absolutely true. At FileSolve, we embrace that truth. We’re excited to work with Hyland software, a partner who also holds fast to that belief. Hyland’s consultants, solution designers and technical experts have extensive experience creating next-generation, proven technology solutions for higher education. Together, we are committed to continuous education (both formal and informal), and that often happens through collaboration.

That’s how you create enterprise solutions that transform realities for departments campus-wide. From students, to staff to executive decision makers and IT teams, we believe technology should empower.

Times change… and that can be a very good thing. Embracing new technology that’s altering the way we work and live is just one more thrilling piece of living in the 21st century.
